During this economic downturn, people are looking for ways to save money and to use money more prudently. It seems like everything is fair game for budget cuts, including our pets’ health care.

The temptation may be great to make budget cuts around pet health care; for instance, cutting back on preventive care and wellness checks. However, by economizing on preventive care, we may be opening ourselves up for actually spending more money in the longrun. Written by a vet, the informative article, “Don’t Skimp on Pet’s Preventive Care During Tough Economic Times,” gives some information and guidance on where and how to cut back on pet care.

In previous posts, the animals have been sharing their point of view on our economic situation. Today I asked the animals if anyone else had something to say on that subject and Sparrow came forward.

S: “Good morning, I am Sparrow, I am here to help you! See how small I am? I may be small, but I am as big as I need to be to be who I am and do what I do. If I were any different size from the size I am, I would not be efficient as I am.

“I trust that my size is perfect for me. I trust that my size allows me to be who I am and to find all that I need. Not only do I find what I need, I am able to carry it back home with me to my nest. I am just perfect for what I need to do.”

JR: “Help me out here, Sparrow. I’m not understanding what your size has to do with our economic situation.”

S: “Don’t you see? It’s more about trusting that you have everything you need for the size you are! You were looking at it backwards, but I am glad you asked me to explain it to you.

“Humans have to realize that they only need what they need for their size. If they take too much for their size, why, then they won’t use it and somebody else won’t have it for their size.

“Size is important to us Sparrows. We are very aware of how much we need based on our size. You humans can learn from that – it is a lesson that we are willing to teach you.

“Why, if we carried back too much to our homes like humans do, we would be weighted down and we wouldn’t be able to fly! What’s a sparrow that can’t fly? And our nests would be so heavy they would fall to the ground. That would not be safe for us Sparrows. We are not safe on the ground.

“We also only take back to our homes what we Sparrows use. It doesn’t make sense to take to our homes what an owl would use, or what a fish would use. So we Sparrows know what we need and we only use that.

“When you humans learn our Sparrow lesson, you will see how much there is to go around, there is always enough to go around, there is always enough.

JR: “Sparrow, would it be accurate to say that because we humans tend to think bigger is better and more is better, that we tend to overestimate our size?

S: “Yes, that’s very well said. Humans need to see what they see, and not make anything more out of it. It will take practice, and care, and watching. But watch us Sparrows, you will learn from us. That is all, I am flying away now.”

JR: “Thank you, Sparrow, for sharing your wisdom with us.”

Question for you: Is what you carry back to your homes appropriate for your size? Let us know your thoughts on Sparrow’s wisdom!
