We All Do Better When ALL Creatures Do Better – that is the underlying philosophy at Talk2theAnimals.

And here’s a chance for ALL of us to help out!

Talk2theAnimals is hosting Paws4Pets, an event to help the animals at Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue. Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue (RLRR) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The rescue/shelter is located on the Red Lake Indian reservation in northwestern Minnesota.

The shelter is run, singlehandedly, by Karen Good who lives and teaches at-risk high school kids on the reservation. She began the rescue with a mission to decrease the overpopulation of companion animals and the resulting homelessness, disease, malnutrition, and abuse, which has remained unchecked for generations on the reservation. There is no other program like this one in the history of the nation that address the needs or protect the rights of companion animals.

There are no veterinarians on the reservation, so there is a lack of medical care and neuter/spay. Even those animals who are not homeless often live outdoors.

Karen’s goals are three-fold:

• to rescue and find homes for the animals in need
• to facilitate spay/neuter and medical care
• to provide humane education to the residents of Red Lake reservation

On Thursday, May 13 from 5:00-8:00 PM CST, Talk2theAnimals is hosting Paws4Pets to benefit Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue. Last weekend I attended the Twin Ports Pet Expo in Duluth, MN.  Talk2theAnimals had a booth there, and I spoke at four different sessions on animal communication.

What can I say? It was a hoot and a holler!

The expo had everything from vendors, food, and of course, adorable pets for adoption, to herding ducks.  Unfortunately, I can’t tell you anything about the herding ducks demonstration.  However, I did hear that if a duck came your way to just stay still.

I saw little toddlers just barely able to walk have the confidence to walk under the Great Danes. Wow, what confidence, courage and trust those toddlers have!

Recently Ali Jarvis of SideWalk Dog invited me to attend a fundraising luncheon for the Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota.  While I had heard of this organization, this luncheon provided me with the opportunity to learn more of what they do.

I learned HSDM provides hearing dogs, special skill dogs, service dogs, including dogs who assist people who experience diabetes and seizures, and they provide dogs who assist people who are autistic.

Wonderful testimonies were given by families who do have a dog from HSDM, and some of the service dogs also made an appearance.  Two puppies in training were there and of course, they were a big hit with those of us who needed a puppy fix.

Whether you’re a newbie or a pro in talking with your pets, Talk2theAnimals TeleParties are an easy and fun way to experience animal communication.  There are no more than 6 people at a TeleParty.  We start with a very short introduction of what you can expect, we end with hearing what it was like for you to experience hearing a message from your pet, and in between YOU experience the Wisdom Behind the Whiskers!

Folks who haven’t experienced animal communication before may not know what to ask, or have any specific questions.  No problem!  When that happens, I tune into your pet and your pet does the talking.

You can also talk with deceased animals if you wish.  Pets must currently be your pets, not former pets who are now living with someone else. Each party consists of up to six participants.  From the comfort of each of your homes, call in and hear what your pet has to say to you.

We begin each party talking about what animal communication is, and end by sharing what it is like to get information from your beloved pet.  In between, we’ll share laughter and fun as we have a heartfelt conversation with each pet, get answers and relationships are renewed!

I’m happy to introduce you to Therese at PetSitUSA, our guest blogger.  Therese can be found at PetSitUsa and in today’s post she offers some excellent tips, hints and insights about pets and the holiday season.

The holiday season is here again, and so is all the frenzy and excitement that comes along with it. With everything that goes into making the holidays special it’s easy to get overwhelmed and let things slip through the cracks. When it comes to our pets though, it’s important to keep their safety in mind. All it takes is a little bit of planning and preparation to keep your pets safe during the holidays, and here are a few tips to help get you started.

• Stabilize your Christmas tree by tying it to a railing or even a hook in the ceiling. Cats are notorious for climbing trees, inside or out, and even the smallest cat may be able to knock a tree down, causing broken ornaments and/or furniture, electrical problems and more. Tying your tree in place will make it harder for a pet to tip over.
• If possible, put your Christmas tree in a room you can close or block your pets out of when you go to bed or leave your house. If that’s not possible, put all ornaments and lights up high enough that your pets won’t be able to get to them.
• Christmas tree water can make your pets sick, so be sure to block the tree stand if you use a real tree. An e-collar works great for this purpose. It can be wrapped around the base of the tree, including the water pan. Then to hide it, wrap a sheet or tree skirt around it.
• Don’t use tinsel, especially if you have cats. Most cats will swallow tinsel, which can cause obstructions in the intestines and become a life-threatening situation.
• Poinsettias, mistletoe, and other plants are poisonous to pets and should be kept out of their reach.
• Unplug holiday lights when you’re not around to supervise your pets. Just turning them off isn’t good enough – unplug them. Even when the lights are off pets can become interested in the cords and the lights themselves, and bite or chew them. (Remember the charred cat in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation?)
• Keep lit candles in a place where your pets cannot get near them.
• Be sure any outdoor decorations are out of reach of any outdoor pets.
• If your community celebrates the new year with fireworks, be sure your pet is inside. Fireworks frighten many pets and if they’re outside they may get out of their yard in an attempt to escape the noise.
• Keep the holiday treats out of your pets’ reach. You may not like Grandma’s fruit cake, but your dog may think it’s the next best thing to raw meaty bones! Anything containing chocolate, sugar, artificial sweetener, and many of the foods we gain weight on during the holidays can be very bad for your pets.
• If you have a party during the holidays, make sure your pets have a secure place to be away from your guests. A bedroom with soft music is ideal. However, if your pets are social and want to be around your guests, make sure everyone knows not to feed your pets. It’s also a good idea to use a baby gate or some other barrier at your front door so your pets don’t get out as your guests come and go.
• If you’re leaving for the holidays and a pet sitter or someone else will be caring for your pets be sure to put any decorations away that may be dangerous. Keep in mind that even the most well behaved pets may get bored and get into things they normally wouldn’t get into if you were around.

Ultimately the main thing to do is to think twice about how and where you use your holiday decorations. While you and the kids may admire them as the most beautiful things on earth, your pets may have a different idea. Sure, they may think they’re wonderful, but instead of standing back to admire everything, they’ll probably want to get up close and personal. This means your pets will investigate everything with their nose, mouth, and paws which can result in injuries and/or illness. So, as you deck the halls, look at your decorations carefully and consider how your pet may react to them. If you think something may be a potential danger, think twice about using it, or whether it might even be best to pack it up in a box and put it back in the attic.

Sometimes even the best preparations don’t prevent accidents from happening, and this goes for any time of the year, not just during the holidays. So, to save time if there is an accident, keep your veterinarian’s phone number handy and know where the nearest emergency animal clinic is located. You’ll also want to keep the number of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, 888-426-4435. Write all the info down and tape it to the inside of a kitchen cabinet, so it’s easy to find.

With a little bit of planning you and your pets should be able to breeze through the holidays safely and have a wonderful time.

I know I’ve made it big time!  How do I know that?  Because last Friday night I was the animal communicator at DIVAMN’s Ultimate Pajama Party held at Graves 601 Hotel in downtown Minneapolis and I got to work in my new jammies!

The proceeds from the event benefit MN women and children with HIV/AIDS.

There were hundreds of people there, almost all in their jammies.  Vendors galore were also present, everything from clothing, makeup and massage to, well, an animal communicator.

People lined up to have me talk to their animals.  I even got to chat with a couple of reptiles.  Usually when people come to me for a communication, they may be at their wits end about a problem or they at least have some questions lined up.  What was fun about this event was that most of the people there had not heard of animal communication and had no idea what to expect!

I found that fascinating.  I was in a position to introduce many, many people to the idea of animal communication, and help them to get to know their pet in a different way.

Without questions being presented, I linked into their animal and gave the person a brief overview of life through their animal’s eyes, how their animal experienced their relationship, and if the animal had a message for them.  Very brief, very simple, yet very moving for those who had never had a message from their animals before.
