Choosing to Be: Lessons in Living from a Feline Zen Master by Kat Tansey is a moving and inspiring book about how her two cats helped her journey from severe physical and emotional problems to the world of wellness. In listening to their wisdom, Kat discovered the world of meditation and learning to be. Kat’s story is filled with humor and tears, as well as a world of cat-wisdom that is open to those of us who are willing to listen.

“Before you make a choice you cannot undo,” says Poohbear Decagoonacoon, “you need to understand the nature of your own mind. Whether you are a human or a cat, the same technique applies. You must learn to sit and meditate. And I happen to know more than a little bit about this,” he observed, making a point of sitting down and tucking both paws under his chest in his Buddha pose.

You will be able to hear Kat tell her own story tomorrow, 8/19 at 1PM CST on Talk2theAnimalsRadio.  If you are unable to tune in live, the show will be available for download at Talk2theAnimalsRadio under ‘on demand episodes’ or from iTunes. Tune in, read the book, learn to ‘just be’……Let Poohbear guide you!

Harmony,

Janet Roper

What do you do when your beloved dog incurs a spinal injury that leaves her paralyzed? If you’re Barbara Techel, you have Frankie custom-fitted for a wheelchair, teach her to use it, and then you and Frankie go on to share the story with thousands upon thousands of people in the book ‘Frankie the Walk [...]

Once I Ate a Pie is a delightful book for PreSchool through Grade 3. Or in my opinion, for readers of any ages. These are free verse poems told from the point of view of 14 dogs and accompanied by lovely pictures.  Each dog’s personality is expressed in both the poetry and pictures.
Mr. Beefy, the [...]

This summer I’ve been cleaning house and finding all kinds of gems – particularly with books. I’m such a bookaholic the books have been ‘double parked’ on shelves and flowing over to the flow. I also became cognizant of how many bookshelves there are in the house, and I’m keeping that a secret!
Broken: A Love [...]

Animals and Grief

July 16, 2010

It’s been nine months since I had to put my 17 year old perpetual puppy Teddy down. I still miss him. Part of me thinks ‘oh, c’mon, it’s been 9 months, for heaven sakes, get over it’.  The other part of me, that nurturing, caring part of myself, understands that grief comes in waves and [...]

Pets and the Planet: A Practical Guide to Sustainable Pet Care I have to be honest here, I have not yet read this book. But it is on my to-read-in-the-near-future list.
This book gives details and tips on how to care for your pets in a green, eco-friendly way. We care for our pets, we care [...]

Complete Idiot’s Guide to Pet Psychic Communication (The Complete Idiot’s Guide) True confessions. I dislike the name “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to….” as I feel it downplays the intelligence of people and panders to the idea that it can be considered ’so not cool’ to claim our own intelligence.
Which puts me into a quandary, because [...]

I couldn’t decide which book to share with you this week, so I’m going to share a few with you. These are some of my fave books about animal communication.  I consider each one of them a ‘must’ for your animal communication library.  You can purchase the books by clicking on the book or the [...]

This morning, before the coffee had finished brewing and before I had put my glasses on, I was perusing FaceBook and found a post from Jenny Pavlovic of 8 State Hurricane Kate fame.  Jenny said a woodchuck had gotten under her truck and she was asking about the significance of woodchuck.
What a great way to [...]

If you like stories about dragons, elves, humans and halfbloods, you’re really going to enjoy The Elvenbane (Halfblood Chronicles, Bk. 1).  I started reading it as summer fun, deck reading, and I was quickly amazed at the different underlying thoughts and philosophies that were woven underneath the main story.  Yes, you have dragons and fire, [...]
