I was working on my budget last night and got to the pet care costs. Let’s see, that includes:
- Board: Shiloh does like his accommodations
- Feed: 3 different cat foods for 3 different cats at different ages with different nutritional needs, senior dog food for 2 dogs and treats
- Supplies: kitty litter and liners, toys, misc
- Vet bills: including alternative modalities
- Ferrier: Shiloh receives a pedicure every 6 weeks
- Meds: Teddy gets metacam, thyroid, dasequin and an herbal liver blend daily; Emmie gets dasequin and liver blend daily; I give Mitzie fluids twice a week, costs include the fluid bag, tubing and needles; Billy receives dasequin daily and is on prescription food; Shiloh receives thyroid meds and cosequin daily, is wormed every two months, and has meds for all his varied and unexpected injuries. Most recent injury was a puncture wound which included penicillin, a tetanus toxoid vaccination and betadine ointment.
- Groceries: Yes, that’s right, the critters get a portion of what I eat, including fresh vegetables anda little bit of meat.
I recently found a chart on Pet Care Costs published by the ASPCA. Let’s just say the Roper household is off the charts…..

Maybe you can help with our Oscar – a senior cat who is on thyroid medicine and antacids but eats like a bird refusing everything EXCEPT kitty food. will not eat wet food, will not eat treats – he’s wasting away – at peak he was 10+ pounds now he is 6+ pounds lost over last couple years on the medicine for almost a year now.
maybe he will tell you what is wrong since we [vet & us] cannot figure it out unless we do invasive tests which I don’t want to do since he is not in any pain, just picky eater…
